Far From the Madding Crowd

As the only fully independent pub in Oxford city centre, we make full use of our free-of-tie status to provide a wide selection of drinks to cater for all tastes and occasions.  As well as stocking a range of the usual brands of beers wines and spirits, we pride ourselves on having a number of specialist products to appeal to the more discerning customer.

 Real Ales
From the outset, Far from the Madding Crowd was created to be a good old-fashioned City Centre pub concentrating on serving an interesting selection of real ales in the best possible condition.  We have always had six real ales available at any one time and these can change during the day.  The wide selection of beers which we have sold is demonstrated by the array of pump clips displayed behind the bar but this is now out of date as new ales appear so often.  It would be easier to list the ales which we have not sold - these are really those beers which are no longer brewed in the brewery whose name they bear.  We keep Brakspears Bitter as our house beer and we also have 'Dave's Special' where we provide an interesting real ale at a price of £2.80 a pint.  If this was not enough, we hold quarterly beer festivals where we can have 30 different real ales from anywhere in the country available over the five day period.

 Lagers
 Although we pride ourselves as a Real Ale pub we realise that this is not everyone's favourite style of beer .  Therefore we also stock a range of draught lagers designed to appeal to a wide range of drinkers although we do change these from time to time.  Apart from Fosters and Kronenboug 1664 we currently are offering Amstel and Becks Vier.
  

Wines
 We try to ensure that quality and diversity are features of our complete range of products so each visitor can expect the highest standards whether they are real drinkers or not.  Our wine list offers a carefully selected choice of white, red and rose wines from around the world.
 

Ciders
 We also believe that quality ciders are an important part of our range and we have recently started offering a natural draft cider (Scrumpy) from Lilley's Cider Barn.  We rotate the cider between :-

Crazy Goat (6.8%ABV)

Pig Swill (7.7%ABV) and

Sunset (6.0%ABV)

although the demand makes it very difficult to keep up with the ordering so we occasionally run out! Therefore we have just added the draught version of Lilley's Cider Barn's Bee Sting (7.5%ABV) Perry to provide an alternative to go alongside Thatchers Gold.  We also stock an interesting variety of bottled ciders to ensure that we can cater for the most discerning cider drinker as shown below:-
